Monroe, the setting: Lakes everywhere. Possibly the most memorable part of Monroe is all of its lakes. In the Village are Crane Lake and Orange-Rockland Lake (honestly, they coulda come up with a better name than that...). Further into the town are Round Lake, Walton Lake, Mombasha Lake, Arrow Lake, and many smaller private lakes that make for water views everywhere. Where other towns in Orange County are farmland, orchard and pastoral scenery, Monroe has a more mountain and forest feel to it without the altitude.
Location The Town of Monroe NY is located toward the southeastern corner of Orange County, north of Tuxedo and Greenwood Lake, and East of Warwick and Chester, and contains the villages of Harriman, Monroe and Kiryas Joel. When looking to relocate to the "Monroe" area, it is quite common to also include the Town of Woodbury, just to the north along Route 32, with it's locales, Central Valley and Highland Mills. In fact, all of these locations are within the same school district, the Monroe-Woodbury Schools.
The map-search on this site for "Monroe" includes all of these areas.
Commuting By auto, the drive time to the George Washington Bridge is 45 minutes from the Thruway/I-87 toll in Harriman, and to that you can add as much as 15 minutes depending on how far into the Monroe area you decide to relocate to. Monroe is commuter serviced by the Metro-North Train, and the Short Line bus, both with service into Northern New Jersey and into Mid-Town Manhattan's Penn Station.
Homes for Rent in Monroe NY The availability of homes for rent in Monroe NY is quite high right now, as owners who have been relocated to other parts of the county have held onto their NY properties - not able to sell them for what they paid for them, so they rent them out instead. Some great rental opportunities are available now as a result.
Homes for Sale in Monroe NY The area continues to build new homes and condos, and with the building that was done in the early part of the first decade, there are plenty of newer homes available for purchase ongoing. Homes are also available in the $200 to 300K price ranges, so first time buyers now have plenty to choose from. Values have dropped in the past two years, and are expected to remain that way for some time, along with historic lows in mortgage interest rates. The prices will probably hold at the current low values, but not so certain is where the mortgage market will eventually go.
